Cebu - What to do

Cebu is the second largest city in the Philippines, with the first being Manila. We plan to make this our base from which we would travel on to other destinations. From what I've read, Cebu is great alternative to Manila. I've been there a couple of times, with the latest being about 10 years ago. My recollection of Cebu is hazy so I'm interested in relearning what Cebu has to offer.

Although we are using Cebu as a jump off point for the islands nearby, I'm pretty sure we'll have time to do some exploration of the city. However, there really isn't THAT much to do within the city except visit some historical sites, many of them religious. Here's a list of possible places to go.

Magellan's Cross

Yeah, it's debatable whether the original cross is really enshrined within the current wooden cross. But what the heck, it's a destination within the city and we can always walk on from there.

Basilica Minore del Santo Nino

Since this is right next to the cross, it's an easy stroll to see the church that was built in 1565, burnt down three times and was restored in 1737. Plus, the child image of Jesus (Santo Nino) given by Magellan is enshrined there. That the church and the statue are still standing is pretty much a miracle in itself.

Carbon Market

This is a smelly farmer's market only a couple of blocks away from the cross and the basilica. It might be interesting to take a quick peek but I hear the smell can affect even the steeliest of stomachs.

Taoist Temple

I'm not sure if this is worth the trek but if there's extra time or absolutely nothing to do, we could check out this temple which is actually located within a residential subdivision. It's not the greatest, as temples go, but there is supposedly a nice view of Cebu from the top.

Guitar Factories in Mactan Island

Lapu-Lapu City in Mactan Island (40 mins away from Cebu) is the guitar-making capital of the Philippines. Gregg may be interested in taking a look at the guitars, see how they're made, and maybe buying one for the trip?

Plantation Bay

What with the airport on Mactan Island, I thought that maybe on the way back home (or at least upon leaving the Philippines) we may want to relax before the long plane flight. Plantation Bay is a resort which has a small beachfront, but extensive man-made lagoons, waterfalls, and four swimming pools. We can stay at a cheaper place in Mactan and then just buy a day pass at Plantation Bay. A day pass (P2000 - $50) includes access to the lagoons and pools, lunch, wall climbing, use of bikes, shower room facilities.

Sinulog Festival

January is the month for the Sinulog Festival with their grand parade on the third Sunday of the month (January 21). It's a festival to honor the Santo Nino, or child Jesus, and is basically a dance ritual which remembers the Filipino's pagan past and acceptance into Christianity. There are many activities the week leading up to the festival so if we have time, we should definitely check it out!

Note: Tickets for events have to be bought in advance. The 2013 schedule isn't out yet but I'll keep checking.
